CHAPTER 16
Something changed the moment Darcyâs hand connected with Hadesâs. The Diviner warmed in her palm as his fingers closed over top of hers, and suddenly it was as if every lay line, every atom, every road, and dirt path pointed to one place, one thing.
Him.
The connection sheâd felt to him the night they first metâonly days agoâwas somehow so much stronger.
Like it was a force all of its own.
She looked up at the god, and in his eyes, she saw everything.
Everything that was, everything that could be.
But he was a god.
He was built to last for eternity, and if she was lucky, sheâd live a long life well into her eighties and nineties. That kind of time was nothing for someone like Hades or Cate. Theyâd watched empires emerge and fall, watched society and civilization evolve, for godâs sake.
Her heart caught in her throat. Despite knowing her life was but a glimmer compared to his, she knew with absolute certainty that nothing, no one, would ever be enough for her ever again. She only wanted him, and it didnât matter for how long.
Sheâd take whatever she could.
Whatever he was willing to give her.
Darcy shook her head as she watched Gunner walk away with a post-it note of instructions for wooing Cate. She hoped it would work. Knowing that Cate did, in fact, feel the same way, she hoped. She hoped that despite whatever odds lay ahead of them, they would live happily ever after for as long as life would let them.
Even if it was for a fraction of eternity.
Darcyâs watch beeped loudly, pulling her from her fantastical thoughts.
âShit, I need to go, my lunch is almost up,â she said as she turned off the incessant beeping.
Hades only looked at her with a dark gaze that made her stomach tie in knots. He said nothing.
âHey, um⦠you have a phone right?â she asked as the fog settled in her brain.
Hades looked back and forth, as if there was the possibility she was talking to someone else.
But there would never be anyone else.
Not ever again.
âYes? Why?â He raised an eyebrow at her.
âCan I see it?â she replied boldly.
Hades pulled the sleek black phone out of his pants pocket and handed it to her with a shrug.
Darcy took a deep breath, her fingers tapping incessantly as she brought up his contacts. She furiously typed in her name and number, holding her breath as she did so. When she texted herself from his number, only then did she let out the breath she was holding. She handed him his phone back and winked.
âI have to go, but⦠it was good seeing you again,â she said with a smile.
Hades glanced down at his phone before locking eyes with her once more.
âUntil next time, darling Darcy.â He smirked at her and the sight sent a shiver directly to her groin.
âUntil next time, H.â
Darcy picked up her pace, jogging away from the maddeningly sexy god and toward her car. When she got inside, her phone dinged.
